sakanoue-cafe
A moment to unwind in the city.
Perched on a Yushima hillside, sakanoue-cafe builds intricate kakigori with fine shaved ice, espumas, and clever pairings from strawberry shortcake to roasted corn.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Bowls arrive piled high with finely shaved, cloud-like ice, intricately crowned with light foams and syrups. Perched along a slope in Yushima 2-chome, sakanoue-cafe has earned acclaim for creative kakigori built in multiple, distinct layers that reveal new nuances with every bite. The ice melts weightlessly on the tongue, and thoughtful textures hidden inside ensure each creation stays engaging right down to the bottom of the bowl.
For a first visit, the signature Koori no Shortcake is an easy benchmark. A condensed milk base is blanketed in textured strawberry sauce and smooth whipped cream, balancing the icy chill with the bright sweetness of ripe fruit. The whimsical Taiwan Mango Panda features almond espuma, mango sauce, and tangy passion fruit on top, hiding notes of jasmine lemon tea, honey yogurt, and cardamom meringue within for an aromatic finish.
Beyond fruit combinations, the shop highlights the natural sweetness and savory depth of vegetables and tea. Morokoshi Vanilla-san uses a sauce made from sweet corn roasted in its husk, paired with vanilla cream, sweet red bean paste, and scorched soy-sauce corn kernels for a sweet-savory dynamic. Other rotating creations bring together seared pistachios with cherries, roasted hojicha with fresh figs, or fragrant black tea with peaches, blending tea, cheese, and spice in unexpected ways.
The compact interior offers table and sofa seating, fostering a calm environment well-suited for solo visitors or pairs taking their time over dessert. Payments can be settled via cashless options including PayPay and transit IC cards, and during peak hours, guest lists or numbered tickets help streamline entry. Pairing a cold kakigori with a cup of hot tea or coffee makes a rewarding way to experience the cafe's layered craftsmanship.
